REASON NUMBER ONE

It’s simple. Nichiren Buddhism was developed in response to the need for an accessible and expedient practice to help people with their struggles in this sometimes difficult world. People who are suffering may feel immediate benefits from chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

REASON NUMBER TWO

The practice is self engaging. Josei Toda once remarked, “Reason gives rise to faith. Faith, in turn, seeks reason, Reason thus gained elevates faith and faith thus elevated further deepens reason.

REASON NUMBER THREE

The practice is self-expanding. When we base our actions on a philosophy that reveals the wonder, dignity, and the infinite potential of life, we are compelled to act out of compassion for others. This results in a pure joy which motivates us to take further action. Empowering ourselves from within, our sphere of compassion becomes wider and wider, encompassing not only ourselves our own families and our nations, but the whole of humanity.

REASON NUMBER FOUR

Chanting creates positive connections that transcend traditional boundaries. We see this in the diversity compassion and happiness of Soka Gakkai members and their spheres of influence. Embracing their different backgrounds and experiences, members unite in spirit to chant for peace through personal growth.

The main practice of Nichiren Buddhism is chanting the mantra: Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. You don’t need to know much about the meaning, or the history, but if such things interest you, you may find that a rich context unfolds as you study this path.

Nam: Means “dedication” and has the same root as word “Namaste”

Myo-Ho: is a compound word emphasizing contrast. Like the Ying-Yang represents too seemingly opposing forces operating as one, so might Myo-Ho describe oneness in apparent contrast. It’s often translated as the Mystic Law, or Universal Law.

Renge: Means Lotus, and represents the simultaneous nature of cause and effect. Like a Lotus flowers and seeds at the same time, so might our causes turn into effects in a quantum manner.

Kyo: Means Sutra- an oral history, or literally a “suture” or stich connecting people and events. “The voices of all the Buddhas”

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo means roughly:

“I dedicate myself to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra”.

When we chant, we focus on creating value for ourselves and others, with an emphasis on ending the suffering of all living beings.
