“I’m Not Deep Enough” Mental Chatter During Meditation

As a Quantum Healing professional, it feels like I’ve heard it a million times:

I’m not deep enough” or “My conscious mind is getting in the way!

I’ve heard it often enough over the years to have compiled many tools to address this feeling.

Yes. There ARE different brain states and DIFFERENT KINDS of “trance”.

And YES- mental “chatter” or even “getting nothing” DOES HAPPEN.

It can be annoying!

How do we handle this in hypnosis?

I’d like to offer you a few ways to view – and even ways to USE these active brain states to your own and or to the client’s advantage.

Trance vs. Conscious Brain State Activity

Even in an active brain state- Beta– we tend to go into a light trance state- Alpha every 60 seconds, or so. That’s one reason trance feels SO NATURAL. You’re already doing it! You can prolong this state with meditation including guided meditation.

You might not even notice a lighter trance state. But I- your facilitator- typically WILL notice. You’ll speak a bit slower and softer as these states become more and more profound.

I have clients set the intention that whatever happens during a quantum healing session is what is supposed to happen.

That includes ALL KINDS of brain states! Even states we might not be able to name, to notice or to describe exactly. That’s ONE way these sessions are QUANTUM in nature.

Remember- anything that happens during a session can be USED. Messages from spirit are great, but if you happen to get a message in “real life”, why not take it? That includes messages from the conscious mind or from the physical world.

Blockages are Blessings

Sometimes we encounter issues because we aren’t supposed to have certain pieces of information. Often this has to do with timing. That’s ONE way these sessions are QUANTUM- often meaning, deeper trance states, or stronger connections come to us AFTER a session- or sometimes even before!

Often when my client isn’t articulating much while I’m facilitating, they’ll contact me after a session and tell me about multi layered experiences they’ve had LATER. Sometimes this happens in dreams, in real life, or as they listen to their session recording. The session isn’t over, even when the meeting is done.

Preparation and reflection make a big difference on session results.

Sometimes information is hidden from us to encourage further exploration. “I’m not getting anything” might be protective if the client can’t handle the answer to their question or request.

We might encounter an interruption. One client wanted messages from his wife, who’d passed away. Our session kept being interrupted by his ring-tone. He was upset, and kept cursing the interruption. I recognized the ring tone as a message and pointed that out. He told me, “That was our song”.

The interruption WAS the message.

The Conscious Mind as a Helper

The conscious mind can- and DOES get messages. It’s powerful. It’s useful. It helps us all the time. It’s not necessary to push it immediately out of the way during a session. Why not acknowledge it, first?

Even our resistance can be useful. So before we dismiss the chatter, we might look at it- examine it, and even PLAY with the chatter.

  • Make it worse before you make it better, That’s what my teacher Mike Mandell says. Sometimes I’ll have clients turn UP the chatter. Make it louder and more intrusive. The same way we can adjust our devices, we can adjust the mind.
Realize- if you can turn the dial UP you can turn it DOWN. You are in charge of this chatter, so practice using your controls.
  • Examine it. What does the chatter repeat? What does is sound like or remind you of? What is it preventing? Think of other times the mind chatters, what is happening during THOSE times? Asking questions about the chatter activates a different part of the brain, while it also validates the conscious mind’s power.

What keeps people from going “deep”?

Ironically? The THOUGHT, ‘I’m not deep enough” is one of the main causes. THAT? THAT thought is the conscious mind, so the less we focus on THAT idea, ‘It’s not working” the better! We might start to focus on what IS happening, including sensations-thoughts, feelings, and physical reactions as we consider the session intention.

If you EXPECT trance to “feel a certain way” and dismiss different or “lighter” experiences, that in itself can prevent you from going deeper. Accept what you have BEFORE expecting deeper trance. Why would your server fill up your water glass, if you keep pushing it away?

The idea, “I’m making it up” is another limiting judgment that gets in the way. I write more about this here.

Focus and Distraction are the Same Thing.

Whether we distract the conscious mind by directing focus elsewhere (“Look over HERE!) or whether we do this by looking CLOSER at its attention (ZOOM INTO the brain), realize- it is not so different. FLEXIBILITY is key during these sessions, not any ONE particular result or brain state. Changing perspectives is useful. Learning is the ultimate goal. And FUN, of course!

Expanding our focus, while distracting the conscious mind can be done by drawing attention to different parts of the body, different environments, certain events, sensations, thoughts, emotions, and physical reactions. These reactions can be what guide the session.

Practice Makes Perfect

Some people have no trouble using the imagination and intuition. Other people need a little practice. For those people, I might compare having a hypnosis session is like going to the gym.

Whether we’re looking at flexibility, weight loss, or muscle building, we might perform better with a trainer, and with repetition. Some people will take to certain exercises right away. Others might have to BUILD skill through encouragement and practice. While these brain states are safe, fun, and natural, what’s “intuitive” for ONE person isn’t the same for another. Give yourself and your facilitator some grace while you discover your gifts and your limits.]

Especially if you’ve NEVER done deep work before, or if you’ve been out of practice, you might need to prime the pump before the well of wisdom starts flowing.

You wouldn’t expect to lose 100lbs from any one workout, would you? No matter how good it was. You might not notice any results during any ONE given workout.

But let’s say you get a trainer, and your trainer increases your results by 20%. If you compared the results of working out alone vs. having a trainer, after a few weeks you would definitely start to see a BIG difference.

If you apply what you’ve learned, and repeat it, you’ll KEEP achieving results. That includes preparation and follow through including listening to your session recording. Here are articles I make available to my clients:

Going Deeper Is Not Necessarily Better

There are some definable benefits to lighter trance experiences: People don’t remember their experiences if they go TOO deep. In fact, when Dolores started QHHT, MANY if not MOST of her clients “lost time” or didn’t remember the experience. That’s one having and listening to the session recording is important. As our minds expand, we’re able to remember and integrate different versions of reality, so it’s okay to do this gradually vs. all at once.

Theta and Gamma state experiences- and beyond- can be very difficult to describe or understand, let alone APPLY. A person’s session will reflect their needs, and this includes how deeply into trance they go. People might judge certain perspectives as mundane, and be tempted to dismiss these. But even “digging potatoes” lives (as Dolores called these) can offer insights. These aren’t less valuable than magical lives or altered brain states, let us agree.

Many exercises in hypnosis are simple but profound, and encourage you to say the FIRST THING that comes to mind without OVER thinking it or judging your conscious mind’s wisdom. The same way you don’t need to be deep to look at an inkblot and imagine what it looks like, you don’t need to be deep to interpret messages from your mind.

Your Session Intention

A clear session intention can make a HUGE difference. Not just when it comes to going deeper into understanding during the session but interpreting how you remember after the session.

In QHHT training we shared experiences. Most, if not ALL of us, were BRAND NEW to quantum healing. Many had profound experiences. Other student’s sessions were less amazing- at least at first glance. One man said his session wasn’t very good- he wasn’t very deep. He kept jumping from one idea to the next. He’d see an image. Then he’d get the impression of something entirely different. His demeanor was nonchalant- maybe ne needed more practice? Without being dismissive he seemed a bit disappointed.

Then the instructor asked him: “What was your session intention?”

He answered without thinking, “I wanted to know how many lives I’ve lived.” When he said that, you could hear the whole class sigh as he started to understand what he’d been shown. He wasn’t “unfocused”. He was being shown his lives- they were diverse and incalculable. So many of these appeared so rapidly he nearly dismissed these. Only after he reconsidered his session intention did he understand his experience as something more than ADHD.

Ways to Go Deeper or Gain Mental Flexibility

  • My first suggestion is to pretend. Give yourself permission to imagine. Pretend you are already an expert. What would THAT feel like? How would you act or speak if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Spoiler alert, you are -right now -just the way you are- 100% qualified to do this. So whether you know that or not, allow yourself to pretend that you DO. Pretend that you can go deeper and deeper- as deep as you need to go. Imagine- you know exactly what to do to allow your self to go exactly where you want to go. Then? Pretend that you aren’t pretending.

Voila! It’s that easy.

  • Next. Give yourself permission to be silly, to say things that don’t make sense or to do things that you’ve never considered before. If I tell you to “connect your energy with that tree, and tell me what it says” trust that you DO know how to do that. If the tree says “Booga Booga Boo!” don’t be embarrassed to say that. Hey-maybe your facilitator speaks tree! Or maybe you do, and you just don’t know it yet!
  • All hypnosis is self hypnosis, and YOU are always in charge.
Milton Erickson, father of hypnosis, would simply command his client, “Go into trance!” and achieve this effect. He used HIS authority and spoke to his client’s inner authority. Don’t be to shy or humble to acknowledge and use your gifts.
  • Talk. Don’t think. (In general) The more you share, the easier the information flows. Trust yourself to describe things, especially if the details are hazy. That’s normal.. It might take a moment for the setting or context to become clear, especially as you enter a new scene. Even when meditating alone, speaking out loud helps some people go deeper during certain techniques, like past life regression and quantum healing.

  • Sometimes I’ll ask to speak with the part that knows the answers, and THIS will help achieve a deeper state of awareness. Asking and giving permission helps this process along quite nicely, especially when you ask several times while acknowledging the power of the subconscious mind.
  • Often I’ll encourage the client to start speaking in third person, which helps a person move from Beta and Alpha states into deeper Theta states.
  • “I feel blocked”- I might ask the client to describe the block– what does it look like? What’s it made from? What is it blocking? Where is that in the body? Sometimes I’ll even suggest seeing the block on their “mental map”. Once the block is defined, it’s easy to find a tool, an energy, or a helper that can dissolve, transform, recycle or remove the blockage. Sometimes the blockage turns into a tool, like in this session, where an energetic dagger which only minutes earlier had been creating pain for my client became a tool she used to cut away negative self judgments:
  • Sometimes I’ll walk the client through a visualization, where the Ego or Active mind takes a well deserved vacation. Here’s a longer version of this meditation.

And the Rest…

Of course there are other reasons and core beliefs that may underscore all of these reactions and which can also create blockages.

If someone has been punished for using their gifts, that can create a blockage.

Other entities, soul fragments, and ancestral judgements can play roles in creating distortion as well.

As you keep going, these judgments may come to the surface and may be addressed or even resolved through quantum healing, even if that wasn’t the session intention. There are various ways a trained facilitator or an intuitive guide can work with these beliefs and the blockages they create.

Conclusion

There are many different ways to experience and expand upon your quantum experience on deeper and deeper levels. One level of trance isn’t automatically better than another. When you open yourself up to a range of possibilities, you’ll walk through the gates of expansion and be able to unlock these doors for others.
